A Civil Funeral...
• Is for anyone, whatever beliefs they held, if any,
• Reflects the beliefs, wishes, values and cultural traditions of the person who has died
• Fulfils the needs of the people closest to that person
• Meets the expectations of all who come to the funeral
What is a Civil Funeral Ceremony?
This is a ceremony conducted by a Celebrant rather than a religious body.
There is no set format for a Civil Funeral. Each ceremony is unique – as unique as the person who has died: As unique as the life they lived. It is a ceremony created especially for them. It can be created by them before they die, or after their death by their loved ones.
It is a highly personal ceremony.
A Civil Funeral Ceremony will be everything you want it to be.
When Someone Close Has Died
What Kind of Funeral Do We Want?
You are doubtless facing many difficult decisions at this time. When someone dies there are many things to think about. The fundamental choice of burial or cremation, where the funeral should be, and what kind of ceremony to have. It is easy to forget that you do have a choice.
Take some time to consider what you really want. The Funeral Ceremony is your precious gift to the person who has died. It is time to celebrate their life and say a last goodbye to them with dignity and love.
If they did not regularly attend a place or worship, and had their own beliefs or none at all, you may well feel uncomfortable with the idea of a full religious ceremony.
You can choose a Civil Ceremony.
How is the Ceremony Created?
We will create the ceremony together. I will also liaise throughout with your Funeral Director on your behalf.
I will spend time discussing your wishes. Help and guide you with practical suggestions about content and structure. By listening carefully to memories of your loved one, I can use these as the foundation for a meaningful ceremony which will create the essence of that person. I understand that you will be in unfamiliar territory, and will make it as easy as possible to create a special tribute.
You may want to play special music, a song, or sing a hymn. You may wish to include readings or poetry. You may want a prayer or two. Some family members or friends may wish to speak.
At the heart of the ceremony will probably be a tribute or eulogy which will reflect the life of the person who has died. You may wish to write this. Or, I can write this for you - you may want me to help you write it yourself. In writing this tribute we will evoke memories which are unique to your loved one and their own special character.
However much you want to do, or leave to me, you will remain in control of the process. I will work tirelessly to make the occasion exactly how you want it. You will be able to see a written copy of the tribute before the ceremony, and we can make any amendments necessary. You will also receive a memorial copy of the ceremony to keep.
Funerals can be sad occasions.
They can also be a celebration of the life of the deceased.
They can be inspiring and uplifting, and a very positive way
of saying your goodbyes.
